Switch apps in 5 steps

  1. 01

Keep a copy of the old group

In Splitwise, open the group and tap “Export” (“Export as spreadsheet” on the web) to get a spreadsheet. In Tricount, CSV and PDF export is no longer offered in the app; Tricount’s help center says to request it from support@bunq.com. At the very least, take a screenshot of the balances.

  2. 02

    Pick a switch date

The simplest option: everyone pays back what they owe, then you start from zero in Partly. Otherwise, write down the repayments your old app suggests on that date (who owes how much to whom).

  3. 03

Create the group and send the link

In Partly, create the group and reserve each member’s name. Share the invite link on WhatsApp or show the QR code: everyone joins the group in the Partly app and finds the name you reserved for them.

  4. 04

    Carry the balances over

For each line such as “Jack owes Emma €12.50”, add a €12.50 expense paid by Emma, using “Custom amounts”, for Jack only. Check together that Partly shows the same balances as the old app.

  5. 05

    Carry on in Partly

For new expenses, type the amount or scan the receipt: AI reads the items, you check them, then assign each item. Don’t re-enter the history on top of the balances, or debts will count twice.

What your group gets in Partly

AI reads the receipt

Take a photo of the receipt: AI reads the items and amounts. You check them, then assign each item to the people who had it.

Join by link

With the invite link or QR code, friends join the group in the Partly app, with nothing to re-enter.

Everyone’s share

Equal shares, percentages, custom amounts or item by item, with expenses in several currencies.

Who owes what

Partly works out who owes how much to whom. You pay back through your bank or payment app, then record it: Partly doesn’t move the money.

Splitwise and Tricount: what to know

  • Splitwise’s free version lets you add up to 4 expenses per day. Receipt scanning with itemization and currency conversion are part of Splitwise Pro. Source
  • Splitwise lets you export each group as a spreadsheet, on the web or in the mobile app. Source
  • Tricount is owned by the neobank bunq, which announced the acquisition on 3 May 2022. Source
  • Tricount describes itself as free, with no ads and no daily expense cap. Its CSV and PDF export was removed from the app. Source · Source 2

When switching isn’t worth it

  • The whole group is happy with the current app and nobody wants to install another one.
  • You need the full detailed history in the same app as your new expenses.
  • You would go past Partly’s free limits (3 groups, 5 AI scans per month) and don’t want Premium.

Questions before you switch

Do I have to re-enter the whole history?

No. Start from the balances on the switch date and keep the old group or its export as an archive. If you enter both the history and the balances, debts count twice.

How do my friends join the new group?

They install Partly, open the invite link or scan the QR code, and join the group in the app. They find the name you reserved for them.

Is Partly free?

There is a free plan with 3 groups, 5 AI scans and 5 payment links per month, with ads. Premium unlocks unlimited scans and groups, without ads. The price is shown in the app before any purchase.

Can I use Partly on a computer?

No. Partly is an iOS and Android app. The website presents the app and links to the stores.
